Kaiser Permanente Chemical Dependency Counselor in Falls Church, Virginia

Is responsible for evaluation, treatment, and referral of members to the appropriate substance abuse program (Kaiser Permanente or others). Acts as consultant andliaison to physician and staff as well as to outside facilities/agencies.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Conducts intake evaluations of Kaiser Permanente members as appropriate.

  • Conducts group and individual, in person and through telemedicine counseling for identified substance abuse members and their families.

  • Arranges for or conducts follow-up care of substance abuse members.

  • Performs record-keeping on substance abuse members in accordance with Health Plan medical record standards.

  • Refers members to other substance abuse facilities as appropriate.

  • Introduces members to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous when appropriate.

  • Communicates with Health Plan physicians and professional staff regarding progress and management of referred members in accord with HIPAA guidelines.

  • Acts as liaison to and communicates with hospital/agency personnel and substance abuse therapists who are providing services for Health Plan members and coordinates with local government agencies to provide services for members.

  • Coordinates with local government agencies to provide services formembers.

  • Conducts in-service educational programs on the subject of substance abuse.

  • Participates in the planning, development and implementation of a substanceabuse program in conjunctionwith the departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and After Hours Care.

  • Arranges for and coordinates the use of available space for the program and conducts in-service educational programs on the subject of chemical dependency as needed.

  • Participates in continuing education programs or seminars in order to remain current in the field of substance abuse therapy.

  • Performs other related duties as directed.

Mon-Wed 8:30 am-7:30 pm, Sat 8:30 am-1:00 pm, Sun 8:30 am-12:30 pm. May be asked to travel to other sites on very rare occasions (likely to Woodbridge). Please apply for National Provider Identification (NPI) at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/#/ (fast, easy, free).

Tri-state licensure VA, DC, MD (reimbursed after first year) within first year of employment

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum three (3) years of direct care of substance abuse clients in an ambulatory setting required.


  • Master's degree in social work or equivalent degree required.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Licensure or certification in all three (3) jurisdictions in which KPMAS operates -LCSW or LPC or LSATP (VA); LCSW-C or LCPC (MD); LICSW or LPC (DC)

  • New employees have one (1) year from date of hire to obtain appropriate licensure in all three (3) jurisdictions.

  • National Provider Identification (NPI) required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Proficient in the use of applicable computer software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Substance Abuse, Chemical Dependency, or Addictions' certification preferred.

  • Flexible and versatile preferred.

  • Willing to learn new treatment modalities and work with any population (children, adults, etc) preferred.

  • Willing to ask question and fully participate in a 'speak up culture' preferred.

  • Able to demonstrate a positive, open and motivated attitude preferred.

  • Willing to use Evidence-Based, Solution-Focused Treatment Approaches in Group and Individual Therapy preferred.

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.

  • Knowledge of Virginia State Treatment Planning Requirements preferred.

  • Specialized experience/training in Eating Disorders, Chemical Dependency, DBT, DBT, EMDR preferred.
